This is a page about "tainted" Mastema. The page about the regular version of this character can be found here.

Tainted Mastema is a character that comes with the Mastema Mod for the game The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and requires all DLCs to work. The mod is uploaded to the game's Steam Workshop.

Tainted Mastema takes regular Mastema's gimmick to the extreme. Most items you collect will add broken hearts, which you'll need to remove in order to keep taking items. Tainted Mastema is able to remove broken hearts by using his pocket active item, Desecrated Heart. The character is unable to have red hearts, has Devil's Crown smelted by default, and has innate flight and triple shot. Devil room items have a 33% chance of appearing in treasure rooms for Tainted Mastema. All treasure rooms also always contain an extra blind item, similar to the alt path.

Notes[]

  • Nearly all sources of items will cost HP. This includes treasure rooms, shops, angel rooms, secret rooms, ultra secret rooms, libraries, planetariums, etc. However, there are some exceptions to this. The following rooms and sources of items will not cost HP:
  • The broken heart cost of items is determined by their quality:
    • Quality Q4: BrokenHeart3
    • Quality Q3: BrokenHeart2
    • Quality Q0-Q2: BrokenHeart1
  • Pickups sold in the shop will be surrounded by spikes, as if you had A Pound of Flesh.
  • Desecrated Heart can be used if it has at least 1 pip of charge. If used at less then full charge, it has the chance to either remove a broken heart or deal 1 full heart of damage, depending on the amount of charge it was used at.
    • If the item fails to remove a broken heart, its charge won't be depleted, allowing you to try again or wait until it's fully charged.
  • In Greed Mode, coins spawned from waves have a 15% chance of being replaced with a half soul heart.

Strategy[]

  • Taking every item you come across that costs broken hearts is a death sentence as Tainted Mastema. You need to carefully decide what items you should and shouldn't take to allow yourself enough hp for taking hits.
  • If there's health lying on the floor that you're unable to pick up, it's a good idea to take the risk of using Desecrated Heart when it has less than full charge.
  • Using Devil Beggars, Blood Donation Machines, and sacrifice room spikes become more beneficial since they also allow you to gain more charges for Desecrated Heart.
  • Since buying items from treasure rooms locks you into devil deals, sacrifice rooms will have to be relied on in order to obtain the key pieces.

Interactions[]

  • Birthright: Gain damage, tears, and range up for every broken heart you have. Having 11 broken hearts grants Brimstone. Moving to the next floor while at 11 broken hearts causes you to shoot a Mega Blast for about 8 seconds. The stat up values are:
    • +0.25 damage
    • +0.18 tears
    • +0.38 range

Trivia[]

  • Tainted Mastema's lore is that he himself has fallen into the grasp of temptation by betraying God and instead pledging his new faith to the devil, who claimed to offer him more than God ever could. In return, the devil restored Mastema's torn wings and gave him newfound power, with the catch that he'll forever have to sacrifice his blood to him in order to stay alive.
